Deborah Pulliam Speaker Lincoln PaineThe Castine Historical Society will host Lincoln Paine, noted maritime historian, author, editor, and curator for the 12th Annual Deborah Pulliam Memorial Lecture on July 15 at 7:00 p.m. Mr. Paine’s lecture via Zoom will be on “Perfected Visions of the Past: Maritime Maine in Almost 2020 Hindsight.” This illustrated talk is a perfect accompaniment to the Castine Historical Society’s current exhibit, Risky Business: Square-Rigged Ships and Salted Fish.

Mr. Paine’s chief aim is to engage people in the wonder of the maritime world in all its manifestations. He has published more than 100 articles and reviews for popular and academic audiences. His books include the award-winning Down East: An Illustrated History of Maritime Maine (2018), The Sea and Civilization: A Maritime History of the World (2013), and Ships of the World: An Historical Encyclopedia (1997). He is currently writing a book entitled Global America and How It Got that Way: A Maritime History of the United States.

The Deborah Pulliam Memorial Lecture, offered by the Castine Historical Society each year, is named after benefactor Deborah S. Pulliam. Pulliam, who died in 2007, was a generous supporter of organizations both in Castine and beyond.  She was an active member of the Castine Historical Society and served as the editor of The Castine Visitor for six years.

The Castine Historical Society serves as a window into Castine’s extraordinary past. The Historical Society preserves local history and hosts permanent and temporary exhibitions as well as lectures, education events, town walking tours, and house and garden tours. Exhibits are on display in its Abbott School gallery at 17 School Street, Castine. The Grindle House offices and research library are located at 13 School Street, Castine. Research appointments are limited at this time and should be made by emailing research@castinehistoricalsociety.org.

The Historical Society exhibits are free and open June 11 – October 11, Friday, Saturday, and Monday from 10 – 4; Sunday from 1-4. Free one-hour walking tours of Castine are offered Friday, Saturday, and Monday at 10:00 and Sunday at 2:00.
